Eckford War Memorial

eckford war memorial 2On Wednesday 11 November, a ceremony was held to re-dedicate the refurbished Eckford War Memorial, thus fulfilling a project undertaken by Charlie Robertson and Margaret Jeary – one not without its challenges! – partly funded by Charity Begins At Home, to ensure that six local servicemen who died during World War 2 are properly recognised.

The grey skies cleared just in time, and the ceremony was well attended, including representatives of the Armed Forces, the Royal British Legion, the local communities, and the families of the servicemen. Wreaths were laid by Lt-Col Jeremy Moon, Mr Colin Dumma [representing Kelso], and Jane, the grand-daughter of William Anderson Brown.

The six servicemen whose sacrifice is now acknowledged are :

William Anderson Brown, from Marlefield, 4th Scottish Border Battalion Home Guard. Son of John Anderson Brown and Isabella Thomson Brown, husband of Catherine Sked of Kelso. Died 2 September 1940, aged 28, as a result of a Home Guard training exercise. Buried at Kelso.

Charles Edward Ashton Buist, Lieutenant, Royal Navy. Died February 21, 1944, aged 22. Son of Alexander Allardice Buist and Margaret Eileen (nee Ashton) of Kelso. Commemorated Biguglia War Cemetery, Corsica
James Robertson Inglis. RAF Sergeant 979322, RAF Newmarket, 75 Squadron Bomber Command. Flight engineer. Died 11 April 1943, shot down in Stirling BF 456 – target Frankfurt. Crew killed. Buried in Rheinberg War Cemetery.

Alexander Sherriffs Scott, RAF Sergeant 1567205, Volunteer Reserve,166 Squadron, RAF Kirmington. Died 1 February 1945 age 22. Lancaster PD 385. Crash site unknown. 6 Lancasters crashed that night. Buried in Durnbech War Cemetery, Ludwigshafen.

Ronald Moscrop Smith. Private. Durham Light Infantry 6th Battalion, service no.2987018. Died 7 February 1941, aged 21. Accidentally shot in the UK. Buried at Eckford, by the wall next to the road, beside grave of : Isabella Moscrop, d. 27 January 1974, and Robert Smith, d. 4 April 1974

James Alexander Jackson. Pilot Officer RAF based RAF Lakenheath. Died 16 February 1944 when Stirling EF271 crashed near Grun-Bordas in the Dordogne while dropping supplies to resistance fighters. The crew members are commemorated on a memorial at Grun-Bordas where local people remember their sacrifice in an annual wreath-laying ceremony.
