Crailing
CRAILING is situated about 4 miles east of Jedburgh, on the A698 toward Kelso. This is now a hamlet, but new housing is being built. Beware of the “tale of two churches” … the present village hall [the Lothian Hall] is situated in the former Free Church building close to the main road. People have been known to go there expecting a church service! In fact, the parish church sits several hundred yards back from the main road, from which it is signposted, in a peaceful rural setting.
The present church building itself dates from 1775, but was substantially redesigned in the late 19th century by the famous High Kirk architect Peter McGregor Chalmers. The curved apse is particularly impressive. At present we are planning works to the building, in particular to improve access for people with disabilities, and to renovate the electrical system.
